La Plaque du Clocher
This sign, known as a ‘coachman’s sign’, is in fact a directional sign. From the 19th century onwards, following the expansion of the road network, the growth of trade and advances in transport, road signs began to appear in great numbers along the roads. Initially featuring painted lettering, cast-iron signs with raised letters and numbers began to appear in the mid-19th century.
