What is it all about? Organised by the Charente-Seudre Migratory Fish Unit (CAPENA and EPTB Charente), the Night of the Shads is an annual evening event dedicated to discovering a subtle yet remarkable phenomenon: the reproduction of shads in the Charente. As night falls on the banks of the Charente, this event offers an immersive experience led by specialists to discover a subtle natural phenomenon, observable only at this time of year. Throughout the evening, participants are invited to observe and listen to the river, to better understand what is happening at this key moment in the life cycle of migratory fish. Without giving everything away in advance, this experience provides a practical and accessible way to explore how these species function and their dependence on free movement between sea and river. It also offers an opportunity to better understand the challenges linked to their conservation: ecological continuity, water quality, changes in flow rates and the effects of climate change. This event forms part of two key initiatives: the Joli Mois de l’Europe, which showcases local projects supported by the European Union, and World Fish Migration Day, which raises awareness of the protection of migratory fish worldwide.
