Le monument aux morts

Français

It was in 1920 that the municipality of Saint-Mandé-sur-Brédoire commissioned the Gardais-Langlois sculpture workshop in Niort to build its war memorial. The work was commissioned on 17 February 1921 from the same company. The chosen site was the cemetery, near the main road through the village. Set upon a granite plinth, the monument takes the form of an obelisk. It is situated on a raised platform within the cemetery, facing the main road. An ironwork grille encloses it, forming a sacred enclosure reminiscent of a field of honour. The very simple decoration on the main face consists of a palm branch intertwined with a bouquet of flowers; in the lower section, there is a wreath of acanthus leaves. A small star sits atop the funerary stele. A marble commemorative plaque is situated on the base.
