The public garden is located on the site of part of the Capuchin convent. Between the bandstand and the street is a staircase flanked by two columns topped by rose-blossomed bowls from the former Benedictine convent. The bandstand was built in 1931. It was surrounded by trees, benches and lampposts until 1950. At the south-east end is a monument commemorating the first crossing of the Sahara desert by car, from Touggourt to Timbuktu, co-directed by Louis Audouin-Dubreuil, himself at the controls of the autochenille "Le Croissant d'Argent", on display at the Saint-Jean d'Angély museum. This monument was donated by the Citroën company to the museum of the Société d'archéologie de Saint-Jean d'Angély, then moved to the public garden in 1965. The garden comprises walkways and parterres of lawns, all adorned with trees.
