On the edge of Saintonge, the Charente village of Neuvicq-le-Château is home to a magnificent treasure trove. Originally much larger, the château at Neuvicq le Château is in the flamboyant Gothic style. It was built from 1478 onwards on the site of an earlier castle that was probably destroyed during the 100 Years' War. A tower with defensive openings and an archway to the north remain from this period. The main building, dating from the 15th century, features architectural details from this period: mullioned windows topped by sculpted spandrels, a sculpted door, a gargoyle, etc. One of the spandrels is topped by a mullioned window. One of the spandrels is topped by two sculpted figures: Saint Roch with his dog and two embracing figures, Heloise and Abelard, representing one of the seven deadly sins, lust. The other sculptures, which joined the large tower destroyed in the 19th century, were probably dismantled and sold during the Revolution or when the château was dismantled in the mid-19th century. You can find out more about the history of this castle by taking the audio-guided tour from April to September or during the Heritage Days.
